Banded Flat Rock Scorpion - Hadogenes paucidens
The Banded Flat Rock Scorpion is a very curious arachnid. Essentially its name says it all! It is incredibly flat so it can (and will) squeeze into very narrow crevises in and under rocks. It is a desert variety closely related to the Giant Flat Rock Scorpion which is arguably the longest, though not the largest, scorpion on the planet. The largest scorpion being the Emperor Scorpion.
In this photo you can see how it fluoresces when exposed to Ultraviolet light! It is normally a dark tan colour though when a UV light is shone on it it glows bright green/blue. This does not harm the scorpion in any way though the fluorescent effect tends to fade over time with constant exposure. The same effect is seen in all species of scorpion and the use of "Black Lights" is a common method of finding them in the wild.
