Goliath Birdeater

Goliath Birdeater - Theraphosa blondi

The Goliath Birdeater is the largest spider on the planet. Dr. Robert Bustard, a well known tarantula breeder who is responible for the admirable Airlie Brae varieties, reared a male Goliath with a 13.1" legspan in 1998. The tarantula was only 2 years old.

Though they are known as a birdeater they are not known to eat birds. They are certainly large enough to take on a small bird however their paths would rarely cross as the Goliath will spend most of its time hiding in and under logs and other detritus on the forest floor. In the wild they would undoubtedly feed on large insects and possibly small rodents.
