Indian Ornamental Tarantula - Poecilotheria regalis
The Indian Ornamental is probably this webmaster's favorite tarantula of all time! Its black, white and grey markings alone are stunning but the icing on the cake are the bright yellow and black "bumble bee" bands under the front two pairs of legs that it displays when threatened.
This tarantula is primarily aboreal, meaning it lives in trees where it makes its web "cocoon" nest. It is an unusual tarantula in many ways... Firstly it has a very unusual shape that can not really be compared to any other species of tarantula. And its venom is unusually strong compared to most tarantulas. Though its venom, like all tarantulas, is not dangerous to humans, its bite is said to be paricularly painful and so it is not recommended for handling. Dispite this, it is definately one of the most attractive spiders kept in captivity.
